PTFE gaskets are more resistant to corrosive environments than standard non-asbestos gaskets and are highly resistant to chemicals, solvents, caustics and acids in addition to alkali metals and fluorine. In addition, PTFE has low surface energy and is compliant with FDA regulations.

Ptfe-based gaskets can withstand more severe chemical conditions (including high oxidation) than standard non-asbestos gaskets. However, their temperature, pressure and mechanical properties are not as good as those of standard non-asbestos gaskets. Metal inserted and expanded PTFE can operate at higher pressures.

PTFE is primarily used as a gasket material because it is immune to most chemicals used in industry. In most cases, it is also classified as a food-grade material, allowing it to be used in both the medical and food production industries. Ptfe Gasket materials come in three basic types. Pure PTFE, filled PTFE and expanded PTFE.

Pure PTFE is by far the cheapest of the three varieties and is used in most conventional applications. Filled PTFE is a gasket material with a pure PTFE substrate to which substances are added during the manufacturing process to improve the sealing performance of PTFE. Although ceramics are sometimes used, the "filler" is usually glass or graphite particles. The resulting gasket material is strong, but highly compressible and has excellent chemical resistance, although not universal.

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is unprocessed polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which has been added stress resistance through molecular rearrangement in the manufacturing process. This process ensures that the chains that make up PTFE do not arrange themselves in a fixed pattern. This means that the expanded PTFE has no structural defects (grains) and expands and contracts equally in all directions. Because no additive is needed, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene has the unique chemical resistance of original polytetrafluoroethylene.
